Environmental education on sustainable nutrition for primary school children with consideration of the Planetary Health Diet
A healthy, balanced diet is a key to our health, which should be begin early in childhood. At the same time, what and how we eat are equally important for sustainability, given their impact on our environment. School catering and meals offer a great opportunity to introduce children to the basics of healthy and sustainable nutrition at an early age, especially when accompanied by knowledge transfer from teachers. Parents are also important partners in developing sustainable eating habits: their everyday decisions have a significant influence on their children’s eating habits.
The project, co-funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt, DBU), engages and inspires families and primary school teachers interactively to ensure that the nutrition of future generations better serves both their health and the health of our planet. In order to promote the wider adaptation of sustainable school catering in Hungary, we are collaborating with the National Association of Public Caterers and Food Managers, school caterers, and three primary schools as pilot partners, where we are also involving teachers in the knowledge transfer. Additionally, we are motivating families with nationwide competitions. Because school meals can indeed be healthy, sustainable, and delicious!
